The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a conditional suspension of it nationwide industrial action. ASUU’s decision followed a reconciliation meeting with a Federal Government team which held today (Monday) in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The talks with the Federal Government team came after about two weeks following the union’s consultations with its various chapters on the terms of agreement earlier reached by both parties. ASUU had been on strike since August 14, over unpaid arrears and demands for improved infrastructure in the universities. A reconciliation meeting with the Federal Government on August 17 had failed to resolve the dispute, but fresh undisclosed offers were made to the lecturers. Another reconciliation meeting held on August 29 also ended in deadlock, as ASUU insisted on seeing the government act on their demands. Recently, three students from the prestigious Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife in Osun State, made the nation proud by winning the Spirit of the Competition Award at the 4th International Negotiation Competition in New Delhi, India. It was the first time a Nigerian team participated in the competition. The Competition was organized by U.K. based firm of Herbert Smith Freehills, HSF, in collaboration with and hosted by the National Law University, New Delhi, India. The trio were Oyewole Faith Bamise, Oyiki Great, Ayansola Oluwaseun Joshua, all 500 Level students of the faculty. Mr M.A. Latest, lecturer in the same faculty was their team coach.   The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos zonal office, has arrested seven National Diploma (ND) students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Ogun State for alleged offenses bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretenses and possession of forged documents. The suspects- Adesina Olalekan, Makinde Noheem, Toheeb Ogunowo, Somotun Olusola, Somotun Sodiq, Tajudeen Hafeez Bolaji and Kareem Olaseni- are studying various courses in the institution. They were arrested alongside Iyun Ifeoluwa, Odusanwo Ibrahim, Obanijesu Opeyemi Soneye, Azeez Olayinka, Babatunde Ajala, Ojejimi Ademola, Aderowunmi Ayomide and Oluokun Oluwaseun by operatives of the Commission within Abeokuta and its environs on August 17, 2016, following a petition received by the Commission about their activities.
